Geomatics Engineer / GIS Specialist

Your responsibilities

The Geomatics team of the Site and Civil Engineering (SCE) Department manages CERN's Geographic Information System (GIS), which is used to maintain the Organisation's infrastructure and support decision-making on strategic projects. The team operates a variety of measurement instruments, including GPS, total stations, drones, and laser scanners, and develops web interfaces to share information.

As a Geomatics Engineer / GIS Specialist, you will be in charge of GIS development to define, integrate, and monitor CERN's Biodiversity indicators. Approximately 200 IoT (Internet of Things) sensors will be deployed across CERN sites to detect and measure the presence of fauna, along with several environmental parameters.

Specifically, your tasks will include:

• Implementing a "citizen-science" crowdsourcing platform for neighbors and visitors to inventory species.
• Preparing datasets to feed a machine learning (Artificial Intelligence) module.
• Interfacing sensor node outputs with CERN databases and mapping them in the GIS.
• Managing the integration and visualization of live data in the CERN GIS.

You will be part of a team of 9 land surveyors and geomaticians from diverse countries and have the opportunity to work with advanced GIS technologies, not only in biodiversity but also in other domains.

Skills

• Technical skills in: GIS, ESRI, FME, python, git, javascript, Arcgis, machine learning, IoT, databases, Data science
• Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

• You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
• By the application deadline, you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Geomatics, GIS, computing, environment (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
• You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
• Applicants without University degree are not eligible.
• Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.
